Wonky Logic shares ‘A Thousand Hands’ feat. Brother Portrait, the second single from his forthcoming debut album Mek Do & Mend, out 11th November on Brownswood Recordings.
Following the release of first single ‘Strange Attractor’, ‘A Thousand Hands’ explores the family foundations in which creativity first takes root. Built around ethereal chord stabs, woozy synth lines and a low-slung groove that constantly shifts beneath it, Brother Portrait’s unmistakable vocals drift through a song steeped in memory and gratitude.
At its heart, ‘A Thousand Hands’ is a tribute to the family, friends, mentors and collaborators whose influence can often go unseen. The track reflects the central idea running through Mek Do & Mend: nobody is self-made, and every achievement is, in some way, a collective one.
For Brother Portrait, the song is rooted in memories of growing up in Lambeth:
“A thousand hands emerged from the memory and image of aunties, uncles & cousins, whether blood related or not, filling the house and the years of my childhood in Lambeth. Though many years and miles have passed since then, there’s a sense of grounding, familiarity and home in the presence of those I still see. Each person is foundational to who I am today. When Wonky shared the idea and process for the album I wanted to find a way to reflect it in my experience. I’m proud to be part of the London chapter of the story!”
The collaboration came together with an instinctive creative chemistry between the two artists. Kilvington sent Brother Portrait the beat shortly before Christmas, with the vocal recording following just weeks later.
“I sent [Brother Portrait] the beat just before Christmas. He understood the assignment, as I knew he would, and did some incredible writing. He came round to my house in January and recorded everything in one night.”
Also known as Dwayne Kilvington, Wonky Logic has spent the past two decades as one of the UK’s most trusted collaborators, recording and performing with Nala Sinephro, Yussef Dayes, Nightmares On Wax, Shabaka Hutchings and Emma-Jean Thackray. He has also worked as musical director for Eddie Chacon, John Carroll Kirby and I.G Culture’s LCSM.
With ‘A Thousand Hands’, Wonky Logic continues to introduce the world to Mek Do & Mend, an album built around connection, collaboration and the many unseen hands that shape who we become.
