Today the Hackney born singer Bel Cobain announces her forthcoming EP Kizzy out Friday 24th April via Brownswood Recordings. To mark the announcement, she shares the potent and poignant single “Fucking City” where her blend of mellifluous, harmonic vocals and conversational tone take centre stage to set the scene. On one level, it’s a song about loneliness and love but dig a little deeper and “Fucking City” sees Bel open up conversations around domestic abuse and questions about women’s role in society – lyrically inspired by the perspective of a young woman, her close friend, in an abusive relationship, but also from the perspective of the abuser’s mother.
Named after her dog who sadly passed as the EP was coming to a close, Kizzy promises a transitional body of work written over 18 months of scattered studio sessions, during brief periods sofa surfing and in the wake of a series of endings in her life – passing of loved ones, pets endings of relationships and chapters. Spanning 6-tracks including recent single “Am I Dumb” and flowing effortlessly through multifarious sonic references from rock, jazz, R&B, hip hop, folk, breaks, this project is about coming to terms with those endings, navigating eventualities, whilst still honouring the beauty of life.
Speaking on the single, Bel shares:
Fucking City is about loneliness in a city full of people. It touches on how masculinity and emotional repression feed that isolation and ruin connection. It’s a raw reflection on wanting love, softness, and someone to hold you down”.
